মহামৃত্যুঞ্জয় মন্ত্র মন্ত্রের রাজা বলা হয় । মহামৃত্যুঞ্জয় মন্ত্র মৃত্যু ভয় থেকে মুক্তি দিতে পারে । মহামৃত্যুঞ্জয় মন্ত্রের জপের দ্বারা মৃত্যু উপর বিজয় দিতে পারে । রোগ নাশক, শক্তিদায়ক মন্ত্রও বলা হয় । এই মন্ত্রের অদ্ভুত ক্ষমতা ও অলৌকিক শক্তির প্রমানিত ।

স্বয়ং শিব এই মন্ত্র দান করেছিলেন দৈত্যগুরু শুক্রাচার্যকে। এই মন্ত্র পাঠ করেই দেবতাদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধে মৃত অসুরদের বাঁচিয়ে তুলতেনম শুক্রাচার্য। তাই, একে মৃতসঞ্জীবনী মন্ত্রও বলা হয়। যা দেখা যাচ্ছে, ধর্মে বিশ্বাস থাকুক বা না-ই থাকুক, মহামৃত্যুঞ্জয় মন্ত্রের একনিষ্ঠ এবং সঠিক উচ্চারণ আমাদের চালনা করে সুস্থ জীবনের পথে ।

শিবপুরাণ বলে, এই মন্ত্রের আবিষ্কর্তা ঋষি মার্কণ্ডেয়। মহামৃত্যুঞ্জয় মন্ত্র পাঠকরে তিনি উদ্ধার পান মৃত্যুর হাত থেকে। তার পরে এই মন্ত্র পৃথিবীতে জনপ্রিয় হয়।
